Lexus reveals new RX SUV with 367hp hybrid powertrain

Lexus has launched the 2023 RX, its premium SUV.

The fifth-generation vehicle comes with three hybrid engines, one of which is a plug-in hybrid.

The RX, together with the previously introduced NX and freshly announced RZ electric SUV, is supposed to embody the Lexus brand's "Next Chapter."

It's built on Lexus' GA-K platform, which is identical to the one that underlies the new NX, but with a different layout. The rear has been modified to boost stiffness and expand the wheelbase.

The redesigned platform allowed for a 90Kg weight reduction and a 10mm decrease in total height, resulting to a 15mm lower center of gravity. The wheelbase is 60mm larger but the total length remains same.

The RX 350h is the first model in the lineup. It is powered by a 2.5-liter hybrid petrol engine that produces 245PS and emits 143-150g/km of CO2.

The RX 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid that uses the engine from the 350h but adds a second electric motor and an 18.1kWh battery. Power is increased to 306PS, but CO2 emissions are reduced to 24-26g/km. A range of 40 miles with zero emissions is predicted.

The 3.5-liter V6 engine in the RX 350 has been replaced with a new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder. It has 275 horsepower (205 kW / 279 PS) and 317 lb-ft (429 Nm) of torque, a loss of 20 hp (15 kW / 20 PS) but an increase of 50 lb-ft (68 Nm) over the previous model.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that may be configured for front- or all-wheel drive. According to Lexus, the latter type would accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 7.2 seconds, 0.7 seconds faster than its predecessor.

The RX features a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen as part of its driver-centric interior. Because to the extended wheelbase, interior space has increased.

When the 2023 RX comes in showrooms in the United States later this year, it will be equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 array of driver assistance features. It has an enhanced Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Intersection Support, and new Motorcycle Detection, as well as All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with a new Curve Speed Management feature.

There is also an Emergency Driving Stop System and a Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist for buyers. The crossover may also be outfitted with an upgraded Advanced Park system, which now enables forward-facing parking.

No official price has been released for the 2023 RX.
