Toyota Introduces Home Energy Storage Using Electrified Vehicle Batteries

Toyota announced the release of a household battery energy storage system based on the principle of "safe, long service life, high quality, good value for price, and high performance."

The O-Uchi Kyuden System, according to the company, makes use of many years of electric vehicle research as well as onboard parts.

It is intended for routine use (off-peak electricity, residential PV system support, and EV charging), as well as an emergency power supply (during power outages caused by natural disasters).

The battery capacity is 8.7 kWh, with a maximum power output of 5.5 kW. The press release does not specify whether many units may be combined into a single system for increased capacity/power.

The Toyota O-Uchi Kyuden System provides bidirectional vehicle-to-home capabilities (up to 1.1 kW output) through an AC charging outlet and a specific adapter.

"Unique to Toyota, the system supports supplying power*2 from electrified vehicles (HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV) at 100V AC, and can use electricity stored in electrified vehicles as a backup power source during power outages, allowing users to live with peace of mind."

Toyota xEVs in Japan may also provide power via onboard AC (100V) outlets.

The status and settings of the system may be seen and changed using a wireless LAN router linked to a hybrid power conditioner and an app.

Initially, the Toyota O-Uchi Kyuden System is only available in Japan. The firm has just started taking orders, and sales will begin in August through house builders and general construction companies.
