In a world where stringent emissions regulations are reshaping the automotive landscape, even legendary manufacturers like Ferrari are adapting to a new era. The transition to electrification seems inevitable, and even the Prancing Horse from Maranello is not exempt. Many recent Ferrari models have embraced hybrid powertrains, including the 296 GTB and its drop-top sibling, the 296 GTS.
However, there's an exception to this trend, and it's a thrilling one – the Ferrari 296 Challenge. This purebred race car sticks to its roots with an uncompromising V6 setup, devoid of any hybrid assistance. Stripped of the license plate, Ferrari is free from the constraints of road car emissions regulations since the 296 Challenge is destined for the racetrack in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series. This model represents the ninth entry developed for the competition and builds upon the foundation laid by the 488 Challenge Evo, introduced for the 2020 racing season.
At the heart of the 2024 Ferrari 296 Challenge lies the familiar twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine. However, in this thoroughbred racer, the hybrid component is absent, just like in the 296 GT3 launched for the 2023 season. Unburdened by the rules governing road cars, Ferrari's engineers have uncorked the V6, unleashing an awe-inspiring 690 horsepower and 546 pound-feet (740 Newton-meters) of torque. In the road-going 296, the six-cylinder engine produces "only" 663 hp, but the combined power output is significantly higher thanks to the electric motor, delivering a combined punch of 830 hp.
Ferrari proudly states that this engine achieves a record power output for its segment with an impressive 234 horsepower per liter. Notably, the 296 Challenge makes history in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series by being the first race car to utilize a 120-degree V6 engine.
With such immense power, it's no surprise that the 296 Challenge comes equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes, an upgraded ABS system derived from the 296 GTB, and new Pirelli 19-inch tires specially developed for this high-performance application.
The aerodynamic package on this track-focused machine plays a pivotal role, enabling the 296 Challenge to generate more than 870 kilograms of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h). This sets a new record for downforce in a race car developed for a single-make series.
Enthusiasts and racing fans will have the opportunity to witness the Ferrari 296 Challenge in all its glory at the Mugello Circuit in Italy, from October 24 to 30, during the Finali Mondiali event. Ferrari's commitment to pure V6 power and motorsport excellence shines brightly through the 296 Challenge, a true testament to the brand's unwavering dedication to performance and innovation.
