Volkswagen chooses Wolfsburg for $2.2billion EV plant

Volkswagen will construct a $2.2 billion EV-only manufacturing facility in Wolfsburg, Germany. The cutting-edge facility, which will be located near the company's headquarters, will produce approximately 250,000 cars per year. VW made the decision to build the new plant after determining that it was easier to build a new factory from the ground up rather than retooling existing facilities.
VW's flagship Trinity sedan will be manufactured at the new Wolfsburg plant. The Trinity, which is scheduled to go on sale in 2026, will be similar in size to the Passat and will target the mass market. It is expected to have a range of more than 435 miles per charge and be capable of Level 4 autonomous driving. Pricing should begin around €35,000 ($38,300).
From start to finish, Volkswagen aims for a 10-hour production time for each Trinity. The Trinity will be the first EV to be built on the VW Group's SSP electric "super platform," which will eventually be used by Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and SEAT.
VW's other plant in Wolfsburg, which opened in 1938, currently produces roughly three times the number of vehicles that this new EV facility aims to produce. Volkswagen, on the other hand, can maintain production plans for their ICE vehicles, such as the Golf, Tiguan, and Touareg, by opening an EV-only plant.
