The New 2023 Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 “Edition 55” Celebrates AMG’s 55th Anniversary

Mercedes-AMG introduced another "Edition 55" vehicle, this time based on the CLA, to commemorate AMG's 55th anniversary. The 2023 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 Edition 55 will be available in the United States later this year, with just 55 cars produced.

The AMG Aerodynamics option adds a wider front splitter, extra flics, a new rear spoiler, and new rear air deflector pieces to this limited edition. Mercedes asserts that these gloss black enhancements improve high-speed driving performance.

Black chrome tailpipes, emblems, and grille trim, unique 19-inch wheels, and a silver chrome gasoline filler cap round off the appearance. Cosmos Black Metallic is the only color offered, with silver side graphics displaying the AMG logo.

The inside has two-tone red-and-black nappa leather upholstery, a microfiber-covered steering wheel with "Edition 55" writing and a black 12 o'clock marker, illuminated AMG emblems on the door sill panels, and brushed aluminum trim. A vehicle cover is also supplied.

There are no technical modifications, but the AMG CLA45 already has a powerful 2.0-liter turbo-4 producing 382 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox sends power to all four wheels. Mercedes claims a 0-60 mph pace of 4.0 seconds, with a peak speed of 155 mph electronically regulated.

The AMG CLA45 is the second Edition 55 model to receive the modification. In April, Mercedes revealed the AMG G63 Edition 55, which would be limited to 55 copies in the United States.

Both special editions commemorate AMG's inception as an independent firm in 1967. While AMG specialized in tuning and racing Mercedes-Benz automobiles, true collaboration between the two firms did not begin until 1990. In 2005, AMG became a totally owned division of Mercedes.

AMG has had to adapt to the times since then. As part of Mercedes' electrification goal, the performance division has adopted hybrid and all-electric powertrains. Mercedes also stated in 2019 that some AMG models would be constructed in China for the Chinese market, breaking the tradition of AMG vehicles being made exclusively in Affalterbach, Germany.
