Opel ends production of its Insignia model

Opel will cease production of its top model Insignia at its main plant in Rüsselsheim this year. A spokesman for Opel parent company Stellantis confirmed the same information on Friday. The mid-range car, developed by the former parent company General Motors, has been delivered exclusively with combustion engines since 2017 and is now nearing the end of its life cycle. The portal "Business Insider" broke the story first.

The Rüsselsheim plant is now fully operational, producing the Opel Astra and its sister model, the DS4. "The discontinuation of the Insignia with its non-electrifiable platform favors the faster ramp-up of Astra production," the spokesman explained. Stellantis' subsidiary has yet to present a replacement model for the Insignia. However, the company has stated that electric variants will be available in all series beginning in 2024. This was previously interpreted as the Insignia's expiration date.
